State of Agility 2020: Obstacles to Agile adoption & Aspiration for 2020s

Obstales to Agile adoption & Aspiration for 2020s

Instead of "doing" more Agile transformations and expecting to see different outcomes, get out of the hamster wheel and allow yourself for a deeper reflection. This reflection of mine on the Obstacles of Agile adoption and Aspiration for 2020s is an invitation to Inspect & Adapt the dacade of 2010s, build on it and move forward in 2020s.For quite some time now I have been having second thoughts on what stops Agile from being fully adopted in a long term sustainable manner. What are these invisible forces causing the issues with Agile adoption? And what is possible if we eliminate those? Enjoy my latest webcast on nature and roots of obstacles to Agile adoptions at the dawn of 2020s.
This is to inspire you, encourage you to reflect too, and join the wider discussion within the #agile2020s hashtag.

What is wrong with current understanding of enterprise agility?

A common understanding of enterprise agility these days leads to horizontal transformations: applying Agile concepts in orange environments, to achieve orange goals. The mandate of "top teams" still anchors them in the orange frame of maximizing Return of Invested Capital and as such limits opportunities to use Agile as it was designed. That dichotomy builds even more friction into the system, dis-empowering employees even more. This is why we observe so much of "fake" agility, a.k.a. The Cargo Cult, and this is why companies "cannot realize the value of agile transformations" as I heard multiple times. To achieve a sustainable change the goals of Agile transformations need to be rooted in the green or teal perspective.

I think this short video will inevitably become what the Kniberg's "Spotify engineering culture" became in 2010s - a cornerstone for popularizing the concept of vertical evolution of the world. Thank you Peter Green!

The Leaders' first ability is the ability to listen

"You helped us foster a culture of listening" - this comes as feedback from one of my clients. Indeed, listening is the first step to empathy. It is like breathing - one cannot function without those! :)

Organizational change always starts within individual people. And one of people's deepest needs is to be heard and recognized as beautiful. For this reason leaders' first ability is the ability to listen. Listen to hear, not listen to know when they may proceed with their own agenda. This is why we place Marshall Rosenberg's teaching of Non Violent Communication as the cornerstone of everything we do. Both at work and at home. hashtag#nvc hashtag#dialogue hashtag#leadership

The true OKRs for your company

The 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals is at the heart of the resonate's purpose. I would like to see more and more organizations make the sustainability goals integral to their principles, values and mindset.

Imagine the UN Sustainability Goals set as the integral part of your organization's strategy and OKRs. How would that feel? What stops you from making this suggestion at your next quarterly planning? Why? And what would be the reaction?

Our frontrunners - The Soulful company

Wow, it sounds like we are exactly 8 years behind The Soulful company :) The Gideon Rosenblatt talk is one of the oldest I found on the internet. How brave it was in 2012?!

So what do we do at resonate?

So what do we do at resonate?

In short - we resonate! :)

We do what we are best at and what we care for - Agile Transformations, Business Strategies, Digital Products, Leadership development, Personal Coaching, etc.

So far so typical… ?

However, there is an additional tick we check when we engage - our key principle is that whatever we do needs to resonate with the resonate’s purposeIn fact, this is how we implement and maintain our integrity and this is how we protect ourselves from disconnectedness.

Why Resonate?

The Resonate is the home for my ideas, thoughts and works. A new home that I am moving into, being full of appreciation of my journey including my early Agile Software Management blog, Agile Juice consultancy, creating Poznan Agile User Group community and others. All of these were truly fulfilling and contributed to who I am today. Resonate is the new vehicle for addressing my need to express myself. To act and share honestly, directly, holistically and independently while taking full responsibility. My approach and thoughts may be novel or dumb, great or incorrect, but originating from the inner locus, always respecting others, and aiming to make the world a better place.

The Resonate arose from hunger of resonating, from an unmet need to focus on what resonates within (Principle 1). Not on what brings money, not on what clients want, not what others want. Hence I focus on what currently resonates within my mind, heart and spirit. I mean - I focus on what resonates exclusively. My promise to myself and to yourself - I am sharing, not selling. Hence I will not use the salesman voice of 100% confidence and will not talk from a position of super high ego about the only valid solution - I recognize such approach as not rooted in reality, destroying potential for open communication, and thus harmful. For me human interaction starts with an invitation to a dialog. Please feel invited.

The Resonate is also a home for other Resonateers (Principle 2). I envisage Resonate as a community of resonateers (I know there is no such word; well, until now) who share similar mindset and understanding of the surrounding world. Just imagine the power of a resonating community! Communities grow based on the opportunity to contribute, so feel invited. I mean as long as the Purpose resonates within you.

In the name of personal fulfillment, let's make it happen - I announce Resonate open!

The 3 dimensions of a job fit: skills, interest and values

This article is based entirely on the work of dr Beverly Kaye, https://bevkaye.com/ , including but not limited to this article and then given my personal flavor. The perspective of dr Kaye has significantly influenced my thinking about career choices I make. I find it simple yet powerful and thus am going to share so that the voice of dr Kaye is heard even wider.

When you ask yourself a question of what is your ideal job you are really asking yourself what job resonates with who you are. There are three aspects to consider: a skill fit, an interest fit, and a value fit. They are all critical - the more those 3 aspects resonate between you and your work, the more you are going to shine and be in a position to fulfill your potential, the more the job will be meaningful to you, the more it will contribute to your fulfillment in life.

Naturally you are seeking to use your best skills (skills aspect) at work, after all you invested years in developing and maintaining those. And then it is about interest, about how you are applying your best skills (interest aspect): is what you do a driver of action for you? Do you live your work? Is it what you would be doing if you were not paid for it? Is this something you wake up in the morning for? Did you internalize the challenge, turned it into your passion and now running on free fuel? And finally you are seeking to use the skills in a meaningful way (values aspect) - in the way that will resonate with your values. Otherwise, even with the best skills you can be just dissipating your energy. To check your value fit ask yourself the following questions: am I enrolled with the mission of the organization, do I resonate with the approach the organization takes, is my identity reflected in this organization? Do I want to change and adapt to the organization approach?

By the way, these 3 aspects do not go in any specific order: you do not need to have skills to start with - as long as you have interest and / or values, skills can be developed. It is actually a very human way of personal development that requires self-awareness and a conscious effort to develop based on the open mindset of Yes, I can learn! Similarly, if you love what you do, but at some point will realize you are just silly exploiting your best skills, congratulations! - based on this self-awareness you will have a chance to re-think and to re-define the purpose of your work.
Stay job matched for your enriched life!
